CYBER SECURITY

Cyber security for small businesses, set up properly and kept that way

Most attacks on small businesses start with an email, a reused password or a laptop nobody updated. We put the right protection on your devices, email and Microsoft 365, and make sure you can recover quickly if the worst happens.

Cyber security in brief

Quick answer: Tech Optimised sets up and looks after cyber security for businesses of up to 100 people. That covers device protection, safe browsing, email security and encryption, and Microsoft 365 backup. Set-up is priced as a project, the protection then runs on a monthly licence, and we're an official Microsoft partner.

Best for: Businesses of 5 to 100 people that run on Microsoft 365, have had a scare or a near miss, or need to show an insurer or a client that their security is in order.

How likely is an attack on a business like yours?

More likely than most owners think. The UK government's latest Cyber Security Breaches Survey found that almost half of small businesses had a breach or attack in the past year, and most of those involved phishing.

The gap is in the basics. Most businesses back up to the cloud, but fewer than half use two-factor sign-in.

What does small business cyber security include?

We build your protection in four layers, so if something gets past one, the next one catches it. Choose a tab to see what each layer covers. You pick the combination your business needs, and we add to it as you grow.

Stop threats before they reach your people, devices and inbox

âś“  Device protection: next-generation antivirus that installs in under 30 seconds, updates itself from the cloud every 3 seconds, keeps working offline and can roll back changes made by malware.

âś“  Safe browsing: dangerous websites are blocked before they load, in the office or at home, with rules set by device or team. Its maker reports around 75% fewer malware downloads.

âś“  Email threat protection: phishing, impersonation, ransomware and spam are filtered out before they arrive. Links are checked at the moment they’re clicked, attachments are opened safely in isolation first, and harmful emails can be pulled back out of Microsoft 365 inboxes.

âś“  Email encryption: emails containing sensitive information are encrypted automatically, and rules stop sensitive data leaving the business by email.

âś“  Secure messages and file sharing: send secure messages, collect legally valid e-signatures and share files of up to 100GB from your existing email address, with tracking on every message.

Speed and detection figures are published by the maker of the protection we use.

Is Microsoft 365 secure on its own?

Microsoft secures the service itself, but your data, your users and who can access what stay your responsibility. Microsoft says so in its guide to shared responsibility in the cloud, which puts data protection, multi-factor authentication and access controls on the customer's side.

As an official Microsoft partner, we add five layers around Microsoft 365, so anything that gets past one is caught by the next.

1. Support team: a small team that knows your setup and replies within 1 to 2 hours when something looks wrong.

2. Security audit: we check multi-factor authentication, admin access and external sharing, then fix what needs fixing.

3. Email protection: filtering for the phishing and impersonation emails that get past Microsoft's own filters, with encryption for sensitive messages.

4. Device protection: protection on every laptop and desktop, with safe browsing that blocks harmful sites before they load.

5. Backup and continuity: an independent copy of your Microsoft 365 email and files, and email that keeps running if Microsoft 365 goes down.

6. Microsoft 365: the platform itself, set up properly, with the security settings your licence already includes switched on.

If you're moving to Microsoft 365 or tidying up an existing setup, our Microsoft 365 page explains how we handle the move.

How much does cyber security cost?

Setting up your protection is priced as a project. We review your devices, email and Microsoft 365, agree what needs doing, and give you a price before any work begins.

The protection itself, such as device protection, email security and backup, then runs on a monthly licence, so you know the ongoing cost from the start. Cyber security sits outside our IT support plans, so you only pay for the protection you choose.

Who looks after our security?

Your cyber security is led by Peter Bright, one of Tech Optimised's founders, and handled by the same small team that looks after your IT support, so the people protecting your systems already know how they're set up.

FAQs

Questions about cyber security for small businesses

  • Yes. In the UK government's Cyber Security Breaches Survey 2025/2026, 46% of small businesses identified a breach or attack in the previous 12 months, and phishing was the most common type.

  • Setting it up is priced as a project, and the protection then runs on a monthly licence. We review your devices, email and Microsoft 365 first and give you both prices before any work starts.

  • Microsoft secures the service, but your data, your users and who can access what remain your responsibility. We audit your setup, turn on protections such as multi-factor authentication, and add email security and independent backup.

  • We isolate the affected devices, remove the threat and restore your files and Microsoft 365 data from backup. How quickly you're back up and running depends on having those backups in place before an attack, which is why we set them up first.
